Learning Disabilities: to reveal and overcome

The reasons of learning disabilities have neurological roots. Thus they might raise some issues in persons` intellectual growth or social development. At the same time, we can observe that children with learning disabilities are cleverer than their peers, although having difficulties in reading, writing, spelling as well as listening and thinking. We must say that learning process itself is a complex action. If we take into account learning disability, we understand that it is even more difficult. Also this process has different features due to the various individualities among children. Still, parents should not feel hopeless or desperate as many legendary people had learning disabilities like Leonardo da Vinci, Winston Churchill and Quentin Tarantino.

For example, Albert Einstein could not read till he was about nine years old. Famous animator, film producer and philanthropist Walt Disney all his life had troubles in reading and the celebrated actress Whoopi Goldberg also has a learning disability. By disorder type learning disabilities can be divided into three main groups: severe, moderate or mild. Usually learning disabilities are genetic transmissible, that means, if parents or grandparents had some learning disorders, then the possibility of having the same symptoms in their descendants is rather high. Learning disabilities are constant and cannot be treated. Nowadays due to many researches, studies and expertise in this sector it is rather easier to find solutions to many questions and get a helping hand to children and people affected by this disease. Those persons who have a mild kind of learning disability are able to cope by themselves with the issues in their everyday life. On the other hand, individuals with severe cases of learning disabilities need help very often. Especially if individuals have some sort of physical disabilities they require aid and assistance every step round the clock from getting dressed, going shopping or doing some homework exercises. We must draw your attention to the professional approach in order to identify whether it is a dyslexic disorder or not. As in some cases it might be due to inattention or getting easily tired.

Forms of dyslexia:

• Phonetic. This form is connected with hypoplasia of phonetic functions. A child affected by this kind of disorder distorts the sound- syllabic structure of the word (changes sounds, makes mistakes in the order of syllables, misses letters etc). Sometimes instead of "swim" they pronounce "thwim".h
• Visual. It is difficult for a child to cope with the letters` differentiation. Especially, graphically similar letters like “N” or “H” make confusion.
• Agrammatical. Often we can observe this symptom at children having systematic hypoplasia of speech. They have difficulties in controlling their rate of speech. One of the wide spread difficulties is when a child has issues matching a substantive with an adjective. These distortions can be corrected effectively by speech therapy.
• Semantic. Technically the reading is correct, but understanding of the read information is broken. Also there are might be troubles with expressing themselves in a verbal communication or in understanding somebody when they talk.
